Platinum Club Stocking Stuffing Party

Peoples Platinum Club members became Santa’s helpers on December 6th and enjoyed stuffing stockings for the Children at Blair E. Batson. This toy drive is the brain child of MS State Trooper Jamie Puckett.  Peoples Bank saw the facebook promotion and wanted to help out. The bank was able to donate 75 stockings filled with Christmas goodies and play a small part in this large and very deserving event.

Platinum Club visits Ireland

A Peoples Bank Platinum Club group of 29 travelers left the Jackson airport on Oct. 9 for a 10-day tour of Ireland that took them across two-thirds of the island nation that is about the size of Maine.
Called the “Shades of Ireland Tour” for the many shades of green the group would see on their journey over the Irish landscape, the excursion began with two days in Dublin, the nation’s capital, and wound through 25 other counties.
Dublin is home to Trinity College, where many group members saw the famous Book of Kells, a hand-written and beautifully illuminated and illustrated copy of the gospels done by early Irish Christian monks.
At the National Museum nearby, remains of the “bog people,” were displayed. The chemistry of the island’s peat bogs where the bodies were discovered had preserved them down to the fingernails and hair.
Leaving Dublin, the group set out to visit the less populated areas of the country. Every day of the tour was packed with sight-seeing, learning about Irish history and culture, and a look at life in modern Ireland.
In their free time, some members of the group searched for their own family history since so many Americans have Irish ancestors. Others shopped for souvenirs and traditional Irish goods such as woolens and linens. Still others simply strolled and soaked up the atmosphere of the Emerald Isle or enjoyed Irish music and Celtic dancing at various venues.
Popular activities on the tour included kissing the Blarney Stone (said to impart the “gift of gab” and eloquence), indulging in a traditional pub lunch on a tour of the Guinness factory, visiting a working Irish dairy farm and enjoying tea and scones with jam and cream, and participating in a rollicking medieval banquet at a real castle in County Clare.
Touring the Waterford crystal factory, Conemara Marble factory, and The Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre gave visitors a look at how some well-known Irish luxury goods are made.
A ride around the Ring of Kerry on Ireland’s west coast provided a look at some of the beautiful scenery where the island meets the Atlantic Ocean.
The reward for climbing up to the Cliffs of Moher was a look at the ocean pounding the limestone cliffs 700 feet below in a spectacular display of nature’s power.
After spending their last night at Cabra Castle in Knightscourt, Ireland, Platinum Club travelers departed from Dublin airport on Oct. 18 for their return to Simpson County.
Oliver and Donna McLean, Platinum Club Directors, led the tour, which was coordinated by On the Go Travel and Collette Vacations.
Last week the group gathered at Peoples Bank for an Ireland Reunion Party. A pizza and dessert supper gave the travelers an opportunity to share photos and memories of their trip around the table.

Among those being honored is our own Chris Dunn. He will be inducted during the annual meeting of the Athletic Alumni Association at 9:30 a.m. and later recognized during an alumni luncheon at 11:30 in the cafeteria and also during halftime of the ballgame.

He led his team to win the Region XXIII Championship, the Super Regional Championship, and finished fourth in the College World Series. Dunn led the nation in home runs with 20 in 2000.
After Co-Lin he played for one year at The University of Southern Mississippi, and transferred to William Carey University where he was All-Conference and was selected as the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He played one year of professional baseball in the northern league.
Dunn received a bachelor’s degree and a master’s of business administration degree from William Carey. Platinum Club Greenwood Trip

The Mississippi Delta was the destination for a group of Peoples Bank Platinum Club members and friends on September 3.
The day trip attracted 32 travelers who wanted to see the sights in Greenwood and Indianola and all along the way. With fall approaching, those sights included “King Cotton” blooming and opening and soy beans maturing in vast flat fields stretching along the highway.
Arriving in Greenwood, the group was met by a representative of the Alluvian Hotel, who conducted a short tour of the boutique establishment. Renovated from an older hotel, the Alluvian plays host to locals and many out-of-town guests, especially business people involved with the Viking Range Corporation.
Then it was back on the motor coach for a driving tour of the many local sites used in the filming of The Help. Though Jackson in the 1960s was the actual setting for Katherine Stockett’s novel, Greenwood was the primary location for the filming because more of its architecture retains the flavor of the ‘60s.
Greenwood’s tourism director, who narrated the driving tour, was an extra in the film and was able to bring a personal touch to her narration of the filming. She said that the film’s cast, which included Sissy Spacek, Emma Stone, Cicely Tyson and Viola Davis, loved being in Greenville because of the small town atmosphere that allowed them their privacy. “We don’t have the paparazzi here. They got to do regular people things,” she said. “You’d look up at Walmart and there was a movie star.”
After the tour, lunch was served at the Viking Cooking School. As the group was enjoying the meal, the chef prepared it again, demonstrating the steps and equipment required to produce each dish.
To walk off the calories, tour leader Lance Clay of Trek Travel suggested a bit of shopping on Howard Street, where the visitors could select Mississippi-made items from the Mississippi Gift Company and kitchen items from the Viking Retail Store.
From Greenwood, the group took Highway 82 into Indianola to visit the new B. B. King Blues Museum and Cultural Center. The museum is built into an old cotton gin and warehouse where King worked as a young man. Exhibits include items from the famous bluesman’s life, but visitors are also treated to films, music and displays that recreate the era and atmosphere in which King lived and developed his music.
Oliver and Donna McLean of Magee, Peoples Bank Platinum Club directors, accompanied the group.
On October 9 club members will depart for Dublin, Ireland, on a ten-day tour of Ireland. After Dublin, featured stops will include Kilkenny, Waterford, Galway, Blarney (where the most agile tourists are invited to “kiss the Blarney Stone”), the Ring of Kerry, Killarney, Limerick, Tullamore, Kingscourt and the Cliffs of Moher.
The final Platinum trip for the year is a three-day, two-night visit to the Opryland Hotel in Nashville, Tenn., to experience the Christmas atmosphere of the hotel and enjoy the Grand Ole Opry and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, starring the world famous Rockettes. Club members and friends depart on Nov. 29 and return Dec. 1.

Mississippi Bankers Association warns consumers of identity theft scams

JACKSON – The Mississippi Bankers Association is warning consumers not to fall victim to a sudden increase in telephone, text message and email phishing scams that have been reported in Mississippi.

According to reports, perpetrators are using automated phone calls, text messages and emails to misinform consumers that their debit cards have been deactivated.  Consumers are then prompted to provide account information.  Those who respond to these inquiries run the potential risk of having their information used fraudulently.

To avoid becoming the victim of a scam, the Mississippi Bankers Association offers the following tips:
  • Never give out your personal or financial information in response to an unsolicited phone call, text message, fax or email, no matter how official it may seem.
  • Do not respond to a call that may warn of dire consequences unless you validate your information immediately.  Contact your bank to confirm the call's validity using a telephone number or Web address you know to be genuine.
  • Check your credit card and bank account statements regularly and look for unauthorized transactions, even small ones.  Some thieves hope small transactions will go unnoticed.  Report discrepancies immediately.
  • If you have responded to an unsolicited message, contact your bank immediately so they can protect your account and your identity.

Peoples Bank is great…but why.

I have worked at Peoples Bank for 3 years now, I am constantly in awe of what an amazing work environment we have and also that our customers seem to enjoy the bank so much.  So what is it that makes coming to Peoples Bank so great?  I think that it is ironic for this to be the answer but the simple answer to that question is in our name.  It’s the “people” that makes Peoples Bank so great.  I was asking a new employee last week what she thought of the bank and she responded simply that we have the best people.  As she was explaining what she meant I realized that what she was saying wasn’t an arrogant statement or saying that our folks were superior.  To the contrary she said that our folks were caring and compassionate, and that our folks were the workers and the doers in our communities.  So I guess that’s it in a nut shell.  Peoples Bank is made up of caring, hardworking, compassionate, doers.  So if when you are looking for a bank…if that is a recipe that sounds like the kind of banker that you are looking for come on over and we’ll see if we can help you out.  I bet we can.

New Orleans Cooking School & Laura Creole Plantation Tour

The Platinum Club enjoyed a day trip to New Orleans, Thursday, June 7th. The first stop, the New Orleans School of Cooking, was full of the Fun, Food & Folklore that makes Louisiana special! The entertaining class and the Louisiana General Store are located in a renovated molasses warehouse built in the early 1800s in the heart of the French Quarter. They learned the basics of Louisiana Cooking. Fun is a primary ingredient in their kitchen! The menu included Creole specialties: Gumbo, Jambalaya, Bread pudding and Pralines, all seasoned with history, trivia and tall tales. They enjoyed a full meal featuring this menu, plus iced tea, coffee, or lemonade, along with copies of all the recipes.  It was a "ga-ron-teed" good time for all.

After the memorable cooking class together, the Platinum Club had some time to shop and do some sight-seeing in the Famous French Market.

The Platinum Club then headed west, to the historic town of Vacherie, Louisiana to tour Laura – A Creole Plantation. At this historic site, they were able to view the largest collection of family artifacts original to a Louisiana Plantation. They saw clothing, business and slave records, Mardi Gras and mourning heirlooms, from over 200 years of daily life at this fascinating sugarcane plantation.  After their guided tour, they made their way north, for a special stop at Middendorf’s Restaurant for an enjoyable catfish dinner.
