Platinum Club Gulf Coast Trip

Fifty members and guests of the Peoples Bank Platinum Club were thankful for a break in last week’s rain that allowed them to enjoy a day trip to the Mississippi Gulf Coast last Thursday.
Biloxi was cloudy but dry as the group’s motorcoach pulled up to the new Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art for a tour.  Designed as a series of pods “dancing through the oaks” on the Missisippi Sound, the museum is a fascinating piece of art in its own right.  It was designed by famed architect Frank Gehry and was almost finished and ready to open in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina destroyed most of the structures.  It has since been rebuilt.
After an orientation to the museum’s features, Platinum Club visitors were able to browse through exhibits of paintings, wood sculptures carved from trees lost in Hurricane Katrina, and pottery.  A working potter kept the visitors entertained with live demonstrations on the potter’s wheel.
The museum’s permanent exhibit is devoted to George Ohr, the so-called “Mad Potter of Biloxi,” whose work has influenced several generations of modern potters.
After lunch at McElroy’s on the Bay, the group divided, some opting for a shopping excursion to the Edgewater Mall and others taking advantage of the sun’s brief appearance to go for a sail around the sound on the schooner, The George Sweatman.
A visit to the quaint downtown section of Ocean Springs gave travelers a chance to shop, stroll, relax on a bench or grab a cold drink before the return trip to Magee, where they were met by the rain they had avoided all day.
The Gulf Coast Adventure was organized by Trek Travel and led by Oliver and Donna McLean of Magee, directors of the Peoples Bank Platinum Club.
The group’s next venture is a Mystery Day Trip on May 9.
