Platinum Club Visits Slidell

Great food, great shopping, and great adventure awaited 46 members of the Peoples Bank Platinum Club who headed for Slidell, Louisiana last Thursday.
The first stop brought the group to the Bayou Country General Store, where they browsed and bought Cajun spices, mixes, dips and hot sauces, cookbooks, aprons, home decor and homemade pralines.
Then it was on into the city of Slidell on Louisiana’s Northshore for the unique experience found at the Passionate Platter.  Owner Linda Franzo first treated the Platinum Club to an Herb Garden Tour, where she gave an expert hands-on talk on the herbs and ingredients that would be used in the lunch recipes to be served.
Gourmet chef Franzo’s lunch for the group was served inside the 1911 Craftsman home that houses her restaurant.  It included tomato basil soup with homemade bread and herb butter, chicken salad on croissants, pasta salad and green salad, followed by individual apple pies with ice cream and herbal iced teas--all including some of the natural ingredients from Franzo’s garden tour.
After lunch, the group traveled a few miles to the site of Cajun Encounter Tours for a Swamp Tour through Honey Island Swamp. Boarding their tour boats, the Platinum travelers viewed inquisitive--and hungry--alligators, wild hogs, racoons, birds and turtles that abound in one of the best preserved wetlands in Louisiana.
The next Platinum Club trip, a day in New Orleans, features shopping in the French Quarter, the Broadway hit musical Chicago at the restored Saenger Theater, and dinner at Middendorf’s Seafood Restaurant.  This trip sold out during the summer.

Simpson County Platinum Club Luncheon

Political cartoonist Marshall Ramsay was the guest speaker for two luncheons held this summer for  members of the Peoples Bank Platinum Club.
Ramsay entertained Platinum Club members who attended last Thursday’s luncheon in Mendenhall with stories of his beginnings as a cartoonist, his busy family of a wife and three boys, the family’s adventures with a series of dogs, and, more seriously, his bout with melanoma, a potentially deadly form of cancer.
Along the way, the two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist showed pictures of some of his more famous cartoons, which have appeared for several years in the Clarion-Ledger, the New York Times and USA Today.
He also shared his faith and his philosophy of life.
“Every day is a blessing,” he said.  “You have to lean into it.”
“Bad things will happen to you,” he cautioned, “but great things will come from them.  Some of the best things in my life have come from my worst moments.”
Ramsay recalled the day that his publisher at the Clarion-Ledger cut him back to part-time in a cost-cutting measure.
He said that “worst moment” actually expanded his career.  He used his extra time to write several books and take to the speakers’ circuit, things he never thought he could do.
“I had to learn how to laugh at the things that drove me crazy,” he said.  “I could have been angry or I could have made a joke.  I made a joke.”
He advised his audience not to be afraid to try new things.  “You may fail,” he said, “but you may succeed!”
Despite the fun he makes of Mississippi’s political figures in his cartoons, he says he loves people, even those he disagrees with politically.
Approximately 165 Platinum Club members attended the August 14 Mendenhall luncheon in First Baptist Church’s Family Life Center.  The meal was catered by Smokey Mountain Grill.
The summer’s first luncheon was held in Collins on July 24 at the Collins Civic Center.  There, Ramsay spoke to about 60 Platinum members and staff of Peoples Bank.  Lunch was catered by Morgan’s on Main.
Peoples Bank Platinum Club organizes trips and other events for customers age 50 and over and provides a variety of services and “perks.”
More information on Platinum Club membership is available at any office of Peoples Bank or by contacting Oliver McLean, Platinum Club director, at 601-832-1752.

Peoples Bank Certified as a Community Development Financial Institution

In documents released by the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Peoples Bank was named one of 434 banks across America that have been certified as a Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI). The certification is provided to financial institutions “that distinguish themselves by continuously working to transform the lives of America’s most underserved populations.”
The federal agency noted that nearly one quarter of American households does not have a checking account, relying instead on “costly payday lenders and check-cashing outlets”. The presence of a CDFI-certified bank indicates that a community has access to affordable financial products and services as “a staple of economically sound communities”.  The CDFI program invests in and builds the capacity of CDFI institutions to, in part, contribute to the revitalization of their communities, including financial and technical assistance that leads to lending capital and developing services. In 2011, as a result of the program, financing was made available to more than 5,200 businesses, creating more than 25,000 jobs while leveraging $1.5 billion in private investment. It also financed nearly 18,000 affordable housing units and provided financial literacy training to more than 177,000 individuals.
The U.S. Treasury Department defined CDFIs as institutions that have a “primary mission of serving low-income individuals and communities, providing loan funds for non-profit organizations as well as financing and technical assistance to businesses, microenterprises, affordable housing developers and community service organizations. It noted, too, that many certified CDFIs offer loans featuring more favorable terms than traditional banks while also providing services including business planning, credit counseling and homebuyer classes to help their borrowers use credit effectively.
“This designation is recognition of Peoples Bank’s primary mission to make sure that our communities grow and prosper.” Ammann said. “The initiatives of the CDFI program are in line with our own with respect to providing affordable financial services and responsive loan solutions that help our communities, friends and neighbors to grow, prosper and enjoy an enhanced quality of life.”

Platinum Club Travels to Switzerland

Experiencing springtime in the Alps was the goal of 22 members and friends of the Peoples Bank Platinum Club who traveled to Europe earlier this month.
Their first four days were spent in the medieval city of Bern, Switzerland, the nation’s capital.  At a welcome dinner the first night in a traditional Swiss restaurant, the Platinum Club travelers met their counterparts on the tour, 14 members of a group from the East Coast and Canada who would round out the tour, which was organized by Collette Tours.
From Bern, the group traveled by motor coach on daytrips to see the area.  In Guyere they visited one local factory making cheese and another making chocolate, both important Swiss exports. Taking home cheese samples and eating all the chocolate they could hold made this side-trip a memorable one!
Another trip was to the resort city of Montreux, on the French-speaking side of the tri-lingual nation.  In Montreux, they toured the Castle of Chillon, which is built on the edge of Lake Geneva.
A third day trip took them to the beautiful city of Lucerne for lunch, shopping and sight-seeing. Many in the group  opted for a side-trip above the clouds to snow-covered Mt. Pilatus on a cogwheel train.
After four days in Bern, the group traveled through the spectacular Alpine scenery of greening valleys and snowcapped mountains on to Innsbruck, Austria, known as “the Olympic City” for the three winter Olympics held there.
From the Hotel Innsbruck, the travelers enjoyed strolling the medieval lanes of the Old City, where specialty shops, restaurants, coffee and pastry shops and entertainment abound.
From Innsbruck, the group visited Lichtenstein, Europe’s smallest and wealthiest country, and went on to Salzburg, home of Mozart and of the von Trapp family made famous in The Sound of Music.
In Salzburg, they dined at the beautiful St. Peter’s Restaurant, the oldest restaurant in Europe, first serving diners in 803 A.D.  It is built into the wall of a monastery.
The next day, everyone was offered the opportunity to have a day of leisure in Innsbruck or take a sidetrip to the ski resort of Seefort, which they reached by train. Arriving in the mountain town, they loaded onto horse-drawn carriages for a tour of the countryside.
For their mid-morning coffee break, they visited a family-run restaurant and farm, where volunteers Deborah Amman, Oliver McLean and Harry Rankin whipped up an “apfel streudel,” the traditional pastry of the region, for their hungry friends.
The final feature of the tour was a day in picturesque Bavaria, which was once a sovereign nation and is now a section of Germany. The major stop was the town of Oberammagau, where the famous Passion Play is staged every 10 years to honor a vow the villagers made to God for saving their town from the Black Plague that raged across Europe in 1633.
On their last evening in Innsbruck, the group was treated to a farewell dinner at a restaurant in the medieval district, then to a Tyrolian folk arts show featuring a fast-paced lineup of traditional Tyrolian songs, dances and fun.
After their 10-day adventure in Europe, the group arrived back in Magee on May 9.
Peoples Bank Platinum Club directors Oliver and Donna McLean will soon be mailing out information on a day-trip to New Orleans for shopping in the French Quarter, a performance of the hit Broadway musical Chicago, and dinner at Middendorf’s Restaurant on the way home.
The summer months will also feature the annual Platinum Club luncheons in Mendenhall and Collins.

Platinum Club Visits Natchez

For their third day trip of 2014, the Peoples Bank Platinum Club celebrated the First Day of Spring with a visit to Natchez on March 20.
With Spring Pilgrimage in full swing, the 38 members of the group took advantage of perfect spring weather to tour three antebellum homes in the area, each with its own distinctive characteristics.
Longwood, perhaps the most often photographed of the Natchez antebellum mansions, and described as “the grandest octagonal house in America,” was the first home on the tour.  The exterior of the six-story structure was completed first, but when the Civil War broke out in 1861, construction stopped, leaving the family to live in the basement, which had been finished as temporary quarters.
The home was never finished and after being designated as a National Historic landmark, will remain in its unfinished condition that demonstrates the tremendous upheaval that came with the Civil War.
The second home on the tour, Lansdowne, is still owned and occupied by the descendants of the original builder on land owned by the family since the 1780s.
Lansdowne is also still decorated with its original furnishings and art.
Overlooking the Mississippi River on the Natchez Bluffs, Rosalie was commandeered as the Union headquarters in Natchez during the Civil War.  It is now owned by the Mississippi State DAR Society.
Platinum Club members and friends got a glimpse of the Old South through the period costumes of guides at each home and learned much about the state’s history from a step-on guide who narrated the tour.
At noon, the group was treated to a buffet of traditional Southern “dinner” favorites, including their signature fried chicken, at the Carriage Inn on the grounds of Stanton Hall.
The next Platinum Club adventure is a 10-day trip to Switzerland, Austria and Bavaria, April 30-May 9.
Reservations are still being taken for a June jaunt to Dallas-Ft. Worth, where some of the featured attractions will be the cattle drive at the Ft. Worth Stockyards,  the new George W. Bush Presidential Library, the museum at the assassination site of John F. Kennedy, the Mary Kay cosmetics factory, and Marshall Pottery.
The four-day, three-night trip will also include a tour of the new Cowboy Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and several shopping venues, including Neiman Marcus.  This trip is open to members and and friends of Peoples Bank Platinum Club.
More information on Platinum Club or reservations for the June trip are available at Peoples Bank in Magee or by calling 601-849-2210 and asking for Debbie Walker or Oliver McLean.
Peoples Bank Platinum Club directors are Oliver and Donna McLean.
